Preparing your truck and plow for winter
Many of the
problems we see during a snow fall are
related to the lack of preparedness
and maintenance prior to a snow fall.
If a little time is taken prior to the
snow many of the problems (and the
down time and loss of productivity)
can be eliminated. Here is a list of
the thing to do before is snows.
Remember plowing is hard on a truck
and the plow, just because something
is working now and looks ok doesn’t
mean it will work through the winter;
have it professionally tested and
inspected.
1.
Have the plow
serviced and inspected. Make any
recommended repairs now so you don’t
have to do them in the middle of a
snow fall. This includes:
A.
Plow mountings on
truck and plow, don’t forget all the
hitch pins. Look carefully for any
cracks not only in the weld areas but
the frame also.
B.
Check motor
operation including amp draw and cable
condition.
C.
Change plow fluid
and flush the system completely and
refill with fresh fluid.
D.
Inspect angle
cylinders and hoses.
E.
Run the plow up,
down and left, right a bunch of times
and look closely for leaks.

for winter. (847) 791-7932
2.
Have
the truck inspected and serviced as
needed. Including:
A.
Cooling system,
radiator, cooling fan, thermostat, and
coolant protection. Also make sure the
heater is working properly, nothing
worse than plowing in the cold.
B.
Transmission
operation and fluid condition.
We strongly recommend using synthetic
fluid and a transmission cooler on ALL
automatic transmissions. We have found
the protection from heat (thermo
breakdown, the leading cause of
transmission failure) and the use of a
transmission cooler help tremendously
to increase the life of the
transmission when plowing. It’s
also a lot less money than a new
transmission.
C.
Inspect the
suspension system.
D.
Check the battery
and alternator. Make sure the battery
is in top health.
E.
Inspect exhaust
system. It’s very easy for carbon
monoxide to enter the truck cab when
plowing.
F.
Cooling system.
Even though is cold out the engine
temperature can raise enough to
overheat. Make sure the antifreeze
protection is right around -34Deg, the
fan is working and the hoses are good.
G.
Heater. It goes
without saying that you must have good
heat.
H.
We also recommend
add on reverse lighting. To help avoid
accidents when backing up in the dark.

plow ready for winter. (847) 673-7930
